BACK BAY. While glitz and glam are terms that don't necessarily apply in Boston like they do in a city like, say, New York, there are a few establishments in the former that cater to the discriminating patron's palate. This handsome restaurant and lounge is just such a place, combing sophisticated design elements (LED-lit bars and stairwells, maple ceilings, and weathered brick walls) with fine New American cuisine. True hipsters, though, brush past the folks gathered at the bar or seated in the restaurant and make their way down the stairs to the suave lounge area, where celeb DJs and deep-pocketed VIPs hold sway. NB Tables in the lounge are by reservation only.

BEACON HILL. Stained wood, comfortable booths, tiles and a floor-plan that leaves the dining room and the bar open to one another ­ these are now the trademarks of 75 Chestnut, which has reinvented itself as a true American bistro. The mood here is sophisticated yet friendly, making 75 Chestnut the perfect place to meet with friends for a glass of wine or, perhaps, a specialty martini. If it's food you're after, their distinctive take on comfort fare, from fish & chips to pork tenderloin with creamy polenta, is certain to please.

SOUTH END. If you close your eyes, you'll be almost certain that you can see the Eiffel Tower from Aquitaine. On the brunch menu, expect temptations like brioche French toast with pear and maple syrup, eggs Benedict Provençal, pressed Duck and Gruyère sandwich, and fried eggs with grilled andouille sausage. Whether you are looking for a late breakfast, an early lunch, or perhaps a combination of both, Aquitaine is certain to please. Oh, yes ­ their Bloody Marys are tops on the South End.

BACK BAY. A beloved part of the Boston scene since the late 1970s, Atlantic Fish sports an updated atmosphere these days ­ in other words, the original's galley look was traded in for a more polished scene of stained wood, pendant lights, coffered ceiling and crisp white linens. The menu, though hasn't changed all that much over the years (Hey, why mess with a good thing!), and Atlantic's kitchen continues to serve up timeless raw bar classics like shrimp cocktail, iced Littleneck clams and Blue Point oysters. Patio dining is available.

BACK BAY. This sophisticated restaurant offers eclectic French fare and views of the Boston Public Gardens. Representative offerings include butternut squash and lobster bisque, seared black sea bass, and roasted tenderloin of venison. Also available is a fixed menu wherein each course is paired with a complementary vintage. Also highly regarded is Aujourd'hui's Sunday brunch, an impressive affair with carving stations, cheese and seafood displays, and a stunning buffet that features dishes like seafood crêpes, Peking duck, smoked bacon and chocolate waffles.
